STATE REPRESENTATIVE DOUG MILLER TO BRING LEGISLATIVE UPDATE AT JUNE MEETING
By Fran Carlson, First Vice President-Programs
State Representative Doug Miller will be the featured speaker at the next Bulverde Area Republican Women’s (Bar-W) meeting scheduled for Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 7 p.m. at the GVTC Auditorium. With a background of business and community experience as well as his current diverse legislative assignments, Representative Miller will provide meeting attendees with some interesting and informative insights into the business conducted during the 81st Legislative session and especially regarding some of the nearly 5,000 bills filed in the State House during this session. Many of those bills are of significant interest to members of Bar-W and the Bulverde area community. Representative Miller will provide updates on some of the high priority bills.
Representative Miller is serving his first term as State Representative from District 73, which is comprised of Bandera, Comal, Gillespie and Kendall Counties. He is a member of the House Committees on Appropriations, Natural Resources and House Administration. He is also a co-chair of the Air Quality Caucus, member of the Rural Caucus, Tourism Caucus, Sportsmen’s Caucus and Manufacturer’s Caucus.
Previously Representative Miller served as Mayor of New Braunfels and as a member of the Region L State Water Planning Group. Most recently, he served as the Chairman of the Board of the Edwards Aquifer Authority, representing Comal and Guadalupe Counties. He is a graduate of Texas State University. He has been in the insurance business since 1978 and is President of Miller & Miller Insurance. He is a Certified Insurance Counselor, Certified Professional Insurance Agent and a licensed Real Estate Broker. He and his wife, Anne, have been married for 32 years and have two children, Douglas II and Amanda.
The June meeting will also provide the opportunity for members and guests to sign dictionaries for donation to area schools for the 2009-2010 school year. Bar-W will distribute well over 500 dictionaries to third grade students at the following schools: Arlon R. Seay Intermediate, Bill Brown Elementary, Johnson Ranch Elementary, M.H. Specht Elementary, Rahe Bulverde Elementary, and Timberwood Park Elementary. The dictionary signing is a special opportunity for Bar-W and its members to be a part of this special Project, supporting area schools and students.
